Nothing leaves your browser

Most PDF compressors upload your document to a server, process it there and keep a copy for a while. PDF Shrink loads a full PDF engine into your browser instead. Your file is read, recompressed and rebuilt on your own processor. The only thing that ever touches our server is this page.

  • There is no upload endpoint for free users. The server only delivers the page and the engine.
  • Turn off Wi‑Fi after the page has loaded – compression keeps working.
  • Premium members can optionally keep results in an encrypted library. It is off by default.

How it works

  1. Drop your PDF

Drag the file onto the card or choose it from your device. You see its size and page count immediately.

  2. Pick a preset

Light keeps everything crisp, Balanced is right for e-mail and uploads, Strong squeezes scans and photo-heavy files as far as they go.

  3. Compare and save

See the size before and after with a preview of the first page. Save the smaller PDF, or try another preset.

Built for real documents

Real compression, not a gimmick

The engine downsamples and re-encodes images, subsets fonts, removes duplicate objects and rewrites the file structure. Scans and slide decks shrink by 70–90%.

Before and after

Every result shows the old size, the new size, the savings and a preview of the first page, so you know what you get before you save.

Free, no account

One file up to 25 MB, as often as you like, no sign-up. Premium adds batch processing, target size and fine controls.

Target size

Premium: ask for "under 200 KB" and the tool tries progressively stronger settings until the file fits – handy for portals with upload limits.

Works on your phone

Compress a scan on the way to the appointment. Nothing to install, works in Safari and Chrome on iOS and Android.

More than compression

Merge, split, rotate and images-to-PDF are free too, all in the browser. Password protection lives on our sister site pdfprotection.io.

Every tool runs in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, nothing is stored.

Frequently asked questions

How much smaller will my PDF get?

It depends on what is inside. Scanned documents and photo-heavy files usually shrink by 60–90%. Text-only PDFs that are already optimised may only lose a few percent, because there is little to remove.

Will the quality suffer?

Light keeps images at full quality and only tidies the file. Balanced reduces image resolution to what a screen needs (150 dpi). Strong goes to 72 dpi, which is fine for reading but visibly softer when zoomed or printed.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The compression engine runs inside your browser. You can verify this in the browser's network tools or by switching off your connection after the page has loaded.

What is the file size limit?

25 MB per file for free, 500 MB and 50 files at once with Premium. The limit exists because everything runs on your device – very large files need more memory.

Can I compress a password-protected PDF?

Not directly. Remove the password first (with the owner password in your PDF reader), compress, then protect it again on pdfprotection.io.

Does text stay selectable and searchable?

Yes. Text, links and bookmarks are preserved. Only images are recompressed and the file structure rebuilt.

Which browsers work?

Current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari on desktop, iOS and Android. The engine uses WebAssembly, which all modern browsers support.

Why is there a Premium plan?

Batch processing, target-size mode and the encrypted library need more engineering and, for storage, real server costs. The free tools stay free.
